The Lowland Scotch whisky region covers southern Scotland below the line between Dundee and Greenock. It includes malt and grain distilleries with different equipment and production aims. Light, grassy and floral are common tasting descriptions, but the regional name does not require those flavours or a specific distillation method.

The Lowland boundary
Lowland is one of five protected Scotch whisky regional or locality names. The other four are Highland, Speyside, Islay and Campbeltown. A Lowland geographical indication tells a buyer where the whisky was distilled. It does not state whether the whisky is single malt, single grain or part of a blend.
The boundary matters because "Lowland" has a legal geographical use. Informal references to southern style are not enough. A producer and bottler must comply with the Scotch Whisky Regulations and the applicable technical file when using a protected regional name.
Character
Malt and grain are different categories
Single malt Scotch must be made at one distillery from water and malted barley, without other cereals, and distilled in pot stills. Single grain Scotch is also the product of one distillery, but its mash may include whole grains of other cereals and production commonly uses continuous stills. The word "single" refers to one distillery, not one grain or one cask.
Grain whisky is an important component of blended Scotch, which combines one or more single malt whiskies with one or more single grain whiskies. It is inaccurate to say that blended Scotch contains a high proportion of Lowland malt as a rule. Blend recipes are producer-specific, and much of the high-volume Lowland production associated with blends is grain spirit.
