Bottling Programmes

Turn your cask into a bottling that bears your name.

When a cask reaches the right point in its maturation, you can bottle it. Whisky Cask Club manages the full process, from sampling and strength selection through to labelling, duty, and delivery, working with established independent bottlers under HMRC supervision.

Ownership of the cask, expressed in glass.

A maturing cask is a private asset. At a chosen moment, you may decide to realise part or all of it as finished bottles, whether for your own cellar, for gifting, for an occasion, or for onward sale through licensed channels.

We coordinate every stage. You retain control over how the whisky is presented, and we handle the regulatory, logistical, and production work behind a bottling run. The outturn, meaning the final number of bottles, is confirmed at gauging before any spirit is drawn.

Casks are held in HMRC regulated bonded warehouses in Scotland. Bottling is carried out by an established United Kingdom independent bottler.

Cask strength

Bottle as drawn, or reduce to a chosen ABV.

Your label

Bespoke private label, or release under a Whisky Cask Club independent bottling.

In bond

Duty deferred until the spirit is withdrawn from the warehouse.

Process

How a bottling run comes together.

A clear sequence, from first review to bottles in hand. Timelines depend on the cask, the chosen specification, and warehouse scheduling.

01

Cask review

We confirm the distillery, age, regauged volume and strength, and the bonded warehouse location, then assess readiness for bottling.

02

Specification

You choose strength, presentation, bottle format and closure, case configuration, and label design.

03

Bottling

Bottling is carried out by an established independent bottler under HMRC supervision, with full documentation.

04

Duty and withdrawal

Duty and VAT are calculated on the litres of pure alcohol and become payable when the spirit is withdrawn from bond.

05

Delivery

Bottles are packed, shipped, and delivered to your nominated address, or held in storage on your behalf.

Specification

Choices that define the release.

Every bottling is configured to your preference. The most common decisions are set out below.

Strength

Cask strength or reduced

Bottle at full cask strength as the spirit is drawn, or reduce with water to a chosen ABV, for example 46% or 40%. Reducing the strength increases the number of bottles.

Format

700ml and beyond

Standard 700ml bottles, with 500ml and magnum options subject to availability. Closures, capsules, and cases configured to suit.

Labelling

Your name, or our label

A bespoke private label carrying your name, estate, or occasion, or release under a Whisky Cask Club independent bottling label.

Outturn

Confirmed before bottling

The final bottle count is fixed at gauging, once volume and strength are measured, so you know the exact outturn in advance.

Documentation

Full provenance pack

Each release is supported by cask records, bottling documentation, and warehouse paperwork establishing title and history.

Bottles from a single cask outturn, each carrying volume, distillation and bottling years, strength, and its individual bottle number.
Indicative outturn

What a cask can return in bottles.

The figures below are indicative only. Actual outturn depends on the age of the cask, its original fill strength, the angel's share lost during maturation, and the bottling strength you choose.

Cask type Approximate volume Indicative yield at 700ml
Ex-bourbon barrel circa 200 litres 200 to 350 bottles
Hogshead circa 250 litres 250 to 400 bottles
Barrique circa 250 to 300 litres 280 to 430 bottles
Oloroso butt circa 500 litres 500 to 850 bottles
Puncheon circa 500 litres 500 to 850 bottles

Bars indicate relative cask volume, not guaranteed yield. Maturation reduces volume each year through the angel's share, at approximately 1.5% per annum for sherry butts and 2% per annum for ex-bourbon barrels. Older casks therefore yield fewer bottles at cask strength. Reducing to a lower bottling strength adds water and increases the bottle count. Final outturn is confirmed at gauging.

Duty, tax, and logistics

The work behind the bottle.

Bottling a cask is a regulated process. We manage the steps so the outcome is clean, documented, and compliant.

Held in bond

While in an HMRC regulated bonded warehouse, the spirit is held under duty suspension. Duty and VAT do not fall due until the whisky is withdrawn from bond.

Duty at the point of withdrawal

Excise duty is calculated on the litres of pure alcohol at the prevailing HMRC rate, with VAT applied as required. We set out the figures before you commit.

Export options

Where bottles are exported, different duty and tax treatment may apply depending on the destination. We advise on the route appropriate to where you are based.

Shipping and storage

Bottles are insured in transit and delivered to your nominated address across our markets, or held in storage on your behalf until you are ready to receive them.

Provenance

Established distilleries, fully documented.

Our bottling programmes are most often associated with established single malt names. Availability is subject to the casks held in inventory at any given time.

Each release carries the documentation that establishes its history and title, from cask records through to bottling paperwork.
